This is a one-bedroom, experiential stay. For lovers of the authentic and the eclectic, for those who want to experience a piece of history, whilst surrounding yourself in comfort. The cottage is located in Castlemaine and is a great base to explore the arts and cultural offerings and the many cafes and restaurants of the town.
Quite often these little gems fall by the wayside, slipping with time, overlooked for grander, more stately country homes. It was owner and host, Kate Gamble, who saw the opportunity this charming home presented. From the onset Kate was committed to respecting the heritage and story of the home, preferencing recycled materials and items with legacy. The philosophy to restoring this little gem was to do as little as possible but as much as necessary. This has resulted in a rustic but ultimately charming home.
The 1870s miner’s cottage tells the story of the speculator who called this home. A simple structure, which was once a canvas tent, has evolved with the fortunes of the miner. Over time the miner brought the cottage up to standard, doing what he could for his little pride and joy.
The cottage is secluded with private garden on all sides. This makes it the perfect setting for an afternoon picnic or aperol before exploring the delights of Castlemaine. The home is positioned on the Leanganook Track section of the Goldfields Trail. By foot or bike you can take the track into town or head out east to explore the surrounding bush. The track is a part of the 200km trail that connects the towns of Ballarat and Bendigo.
In fitting with the home and personality of the host, it houses a collection of work by local artists, vintage bits and pieces picked up from dealers around town, great reads and all sorts of interesting things. It’s a home of stories and treasures lost and found.
If you fancy a mid-week escape, there’s a farmer’s market on Wednesdays and it’s literally around the corner. Also, worth noting, this little gem welcomes well behaved pets – subject to a small cleaning fee.
If you’re looking for a charming couple’s escape then look no further.
