The Origins sat down with Kate – owner of Nord House Red Hill as part of our Meet The Makers conversation series.
What's the inspiration behind this wonderful space?
It’s a little Scandi space in the woods. The home blends a modern Scandinavian design profile with a country location creating a sense of being in a cabin in the woods. It’s a light-filled space with black, grey and white tones. The home has a transformative feeling – you look out onto the pine trees and just feel like you’re in this wonderful, relaxing space. This continues into the bedroom with soft and comfortable bedding. We sourced beautiful linens from Hale Mercantile – they’re just gorgeous. Ultimately that’s what the space is about – disconnecting and feeling cosy in a bucolic setting.
What do guests love most about the experience?
What I hear most is that Nord House provides an escape from the craziness of city life. The benefit of this home is that it gives you a sense of remoteness, yet everything is still on your doorstep. It’s a cosy and comfortable space in a natural setting though quite chic. The wineries and restaurants of Red Hill are close by, however you have the feeling of being in an idyllic country setting – with nearby walks, equestrian trails, and mountain bike tracks.
What brings you most joy about the home and the space?
We’ve been lucky to have a lot more time here of late. I love the comfortable country setting. With the weather getting cooler it’s been lovely spending days by the fire and looking out to the pine trees. It’s a magical setting. The feeling of Red Hill is so organic – it’s a real back-to-nature vibe and I love it. Having grown up in the country I relish the ability to escape city life. Coming from the city provides a juxtaposition, and it’s when you arrive at Nord House that you realise how much the space and location helps calm you and provide a feeling of escapism.
Picture yourself heading on an escape to Nord House Red Hill - If you could bring anyone in the world who would it be and why?
I would bring my dear old school friends, drink wine by the fire, take some wonderful walks and get to the wineries. My closest two friends from boarding school are like family to me. In the busyness of life, finding time to catch up with friends is a real luxury. The opportunity to get away and escape the hectic nature of life would be a real treat – taking downtime, unwinding and catching up. Enjoying time without having to worry about the family and kids…now you’ve got me inspired, I should do it!
Meet the Maker and host
A country girl at heart – Kate grew up in Harndorf South Australia. Kate met her partner in the UK where she worked in the hospitality space managing events and weddings. With a desire to combine her background in hospitality with a passion for interior design she wanted to find a holiday space she could share with guests and friends. Red Hill was the perfect location for Kate to reconnect with her country roots. Kate and her partner stumbled across Nord House about 4 years ago. A chance encounter and the right timing led them to take the leap and purchase the lovely home.
