Looking for a tree-change, owners Nedra Kriekenbeek & Tony Hammond purchased a picturesque parcel of land close to Nagambie to develop what is now known as Hide and Seek Retreat Nagambie. Sitting comfortably along the sandy banks and wetlands of the Goulburn River is the modern architect-designed 5-bedroom residence. It turns out though that this is much more than a city escape – the property is a working sheep farm and a boutique vineyard as well. Nedra and Tony initially opened the home to friends and family with word-of-mouth bringing more and more interest.Â
We had a chat to Nedra about their inspiration behind the space and what keeps guests coming back to this much-loved home.
What's the inspiration behind Hide and Seek Retreat Nagambie?
We often travelled to Port Douglas with family friends. Staying in large open-planned homes created the perfect atmosphere for our families to come together. We were drawn by the idea of creating the kind of home where families can spend time in a wonderful bushland setting. Getting the balance right between retreat spaces and generous social areas was key.Â
With a brief to create a space that is social and shared, a family friend and architect drew-up the plans and we set out to build the home.Â
An important feature that we wanted to showcase was the beautiful local timber. Tony actually milled most of the timber used in the home. It means we have a connection to the home, and the home has a connection to the surrounding gum trees. Even the furniture was hand-made, which provides an authentic and timeless profile.Â
What do guests love most about the experience?
The property is an incredible space for families. Children love the tarzan rope and water trampoline, whilst the parents have a private sandbank to relax on and great alfresco spaces that take advantage of the bush environment. There’s something for everyone.
Hide and Seek is a close-to-nature experience. We have a 4km walking track which is perfect for spotting pelicans and swans on the river. If you’re out in the early morning or evening you’re also guaranteed to see a few kangaroos. If we’re nearby and free, we’ll invite guests out on our boat to check out the river and watch the sun going down by Kerwins bridge, and perhaps even having a go behind the boat.
There’s also an abundance of outdoor entertaining space. You really don’t need to go anywhere. There’s an outdoor wood fired pizza oven and kitchen and fire pit for when it cools down. It’s a special place and we love that guests also get to experience that. Â
