Beechworth is a charming high country town known for its architecture, honey and gold-rush history. With some two dozen boutique winemakers it is fast becoming a prominent regional destination for food and wine lovers. We discover the three bedroom French Cottage in Beechworth.
The Origins Guide checks-in for a chat with Andrew Beer host and owner of the charming 3 bedroom French inspired Beechworth cottage.
What attracted you to Beechworth?
It’s a quintessential provincial town with a lot of history. We love that it’s a little under the radar so you avoid the large crowds that typically flock to the Mornington Peninsula. At roughly 3 hours from Melbourne we also found it quite easy to get up here for the weekend, so it suited out lifestyle perfectly.
What took us by surprise though was the incredible food and wine. It’s a little food bowl and there’s a number of great boutique wineries. It’s a beautiful regional Victorian town and we immediately fell in love with its charm.
How did you come about owning this charming French Cottage in Beechworth?
I say it’s the combination of luck and speedy decision making! The French couple whom we bought the home from had owned it for about 20 years. When we saw the place we were immediately struck by the home’s warmth and garden. The old growth French inspired garden left an impression upon us. We saw the home online, drove to Beechworth that morning and purchased the home on the spot.
When you know, you know!
Homes like this are more than just the bricks and mortar. They carry a history, a story. The French cottage dates back to the 1850s and was formerly a stagehouse. We’re not quite sure but it may have been an old Cobb and Co. Inn. I love to collect antiques, pieces with a history and memory – and this home compliments my passion for unique collectables.
How would you describe the style?
When we bought the home we undertook a renovation to lighten and brighten the space. We wanted to maintain the old charm of the cottage but incorporate a more paired-back style that feels contemporary. The result is a lovely light filled space with handpicked furnishings, a wonderful leafy verandah and manicured garden.
What do guests love about the French Cottage?
It’s a combination of location and a charming space. We’re located quite close to Lake Sambell so it’s a picturesque and quiet location though close to all the amenities that Beechworth offers.
I think one recent review summed it up quite well – let me read it to you: “The house and gardens make you feel instantly relaxed, with a beautiful interior and spacious verandah that offer plenty of spots to enjoy a glass of wine while watching the stunning Beechworth sunsets.” – I love when a guest enjoys the space as much as we do.
So on that note – what’s your favourite aspect of the home?
We absolutely love spending time in the garden – sitting outside and relaxing amongst the manicured shrubs and hedges is just wonderful. My wife and I get quite busy with work so having the opportunity to unplug and relax is a luxury. The French Cottage provides the perfect escape.
