A reflective New Year's Eve trip to Margaret River led Keryn Nossal to explore the idea of a coastal change. On return to Victoria Keryn and her partner looked for the ideal place to create a weekend retreat.

Coastal Luxe St Andrews Beach | Meet The Makers

4 BEDROOMS | 2.5 BATHROOM

Rates start from $420 (AUD) per night

Drawn to the rugged and wild coastline the couple took a chance, purchasing a vacant half-acre slopping block in St Andrews Beach. Two years later they added a small shack where they enjoyed several summers on the Peninsula.

The couple also set about developing plans for what is now Coastal Luxe St Andrews Beach – a four-bedroom retreat located along the magnificent and wild Bass Strait. Designed to be a special, yet low-key place to gather, the home provides the perfect setting to connect with family and friends.

We caught up with Keryn to discuss the inspiration behind the home and what folks most enjoy about the space.

What's the inspiration behind this wonderful home?

From the get-go I’d describe this as a perfect collaboration between client, builder and architect. We were originally inspired by the modernist profiles of Robyn Boyd and McGlashan Everist. We worked with Aidan Halloran at ITN architects who was able to perfectly translate our inspiration of a warm and inviting space combined stylistically with 60s modernism.

We wanted to use natural materials to create a space that embraces the rugged natural environment that surrounds it. Windows were positioned to both frame the view and control the flow of light into the home. Timber-on-timber was used to add texture and depth. The stone-clad fire also helps to set the mood on cooler evenings.

What do guests love most about the experience?

It’s a combination of location, design and space. Guests love that they can spread out. We designed the home over a number of levels with the specific intention of creating spaces where you can both seek seclusion and socialise. From the reading area, to the social living area of the home, to the downstairs rumpus and lounge room, or the retreat of the master bedroom and balcony. There’s a space for all guests to unwind and relax.

We’ve also intentionally created a social communal space to gather – the living and dining area is a focal point with the stone-clad fire-place and four-metre long dining table. It’s an incredible space to gather and connect with loved ones.

The use of warm tones, textures and timbers, combined with the coastal location create a feeling of calmness and escapism that guests relish – especially when you’re escaping from a busy city setting.

What brings you most joy about the home and the space?

Ultimately, that we were able to create a purpose-built home. We got everything we wanted so there’s no feeling of compromise – it absolutely suits our lifestyle. I love the separation of spaces, the light and airy feel and the fact it’s an absolute haven. The minute I walk in the door, I just feel relaxed. We wanted to build a space where nothing feels precious, but still feels nurturing and special. I think we’ve created that at Coastal Luxe St Andrews Beach.

Picture yourself heading on an escape to Coastal Luxe St Andrews Beach - If you could bring anyone in the world who would it be and why?

Given the current environment – it reminds me of the importance and happiness derived from connecting with the people that matter most. I do miss my friends from Western Australia and New South Wales. I long for catch-up dinners and reminiscing of times spent. I think at one of our annual New Year’s Eve party we had 72 at breakfast – such a great time.

That said, you can’t beat those intimate dinners and ‘chats of truth’ by the fire. Our gorgeous fireside chairs and a glass of wine always gets one to spill the beans. It’s a special home and we love sharing it with loved ones.
