On a trip to Mansfield the couple realised the idyllic country setting ticked all their boxes – year round tourism, a great environment in both winter and summer, breathtaking scenery and lovely food and produce. After building a charming stone clad cottage farm-stay, the couple set their sights on a new residence – BullerRoo.
Ed had worked on an architectural build in Mansfield and fell in love with the design. Being a tradesman, he appreciated the attention to detail and craftsmanship of the build, and wanted to create something similar. After getting the go ahead from the owner he met with the team behind the build and pushed ahead with creating his own home.
The result is BullerRoo – a two bedroom guest lodge with glorious views across Victoria’s beautiful high country. Connected to the main residence, but separated by a private staircase and driveway entrance, hosts Vickie and Ed are only a short distance away should guests need anything – or fancy a tour around the property and surrounding bushland. Both Vickie and Ed have a passion for hospitality and meeting new people.
The Origins had a chat with Vickie and Ed to learn more about BullerRoo and what guests love about the stay.
What's the inspiration behind BullerRoo?
The space is influenced by the incredibly scenic views. We designed the living space to take advantage of this with panoramic floor-to-ceiling windows – both dining and lounge areas take full advantage of the incredible vista. We also built a rooftop terrace with 360 degree views which is the perfect place to enjoy a bbq and relax in the fresh high country air.
We’ve used stone walls and a timber cladded ceilings to create texture and warmth. The cosy atmosphere is enhanced with a French cast-iron fireplace – making for a wonderful evening atmosphere with dim candles and the star filled night sky.
As the space is designed to be an escape retreat, it was important that we create a modern and functional kitchen, generous bedrooms and a luxurious bathroom with an oversized double shower.
What do guests most love about BullerRoo?
It’s the location. The views and landscape are incredible and we always get complimented on this. Our guests enjoy relaxing on the rooftop deck and soaking it all in. The property is set amongst hundreds of acres of natural bush and farmland. The opportunity to get up and close to nature in such a luxurious setting is something guests truly enjoy.
What do you most enjoy about BullerRoo?
We love the views and being able to share the space with friends. We recently had friends visit us for the evening. We lit the fireplace, creating a cosy environment, slow-cooked a pork belly and enjoyed a few good bottles of wine. How does it get better?
I normally ask, if you could bring anyone to dinner who would it be and why? though I think you’ve answered the question
I think we kicked off the dinner festivities at 3pm and I’m not quite sure when we finished. Our friends enjoyed it so much they wanted to stay longer. I’m not sure we can handle it too often but it’s moments like this that bring you joy and a sense of satisfaction in what we’ve created. It’s a real privilege that we can share this space with friends – new and old.
